Welcome to the project website for Coles’ proposal for a world class retail offering in the heart of Austral. Coles is proposing to redevelop the existing Austral Shopping Centre at 83-95 Tenth Avenue & 249 Edmondson Avenue. Planning for the redevelopment of the existing Centre is in the early phases. The process of planning and redeveloping the site will take time, subject to planning permissions, and Coles is excited to build strong relationships with the Austral community to secure the best outcome for local businesses and the neighbourhood.

PROJECT FEATURES

The proposed development of the new Austral Village will include the following:

  • demolition of all existing buildings and structures on the site at 83-95 Tenth Avenue & 249 Edmondson Avenue
  • construction of a single-storey building containing the following main features
    • a full-line supermarket with associated storage and staff facilities
    • liquor shop
    • retail units comprising four main areas of retail floor space that can be divided into 17 individual tenancies, at grade parking, including click-and-collect bays and shade sails.
  • main access driveway off Edmondson Avenue, and two secondary driveways off the proposed future road within the adjoining land to the east.
  • landscaping, including public domain improvement works along the Edmondson Avenue and Tenth Avenue frontage
  • retention of 2,000 sqm of land for a future community facility to be acquired by Liverpool City Council. The area will be turfed for use as a kick-about space and food trucks on a temporary basis, until such time when the ownership of the land is transferred to Council. The northern edge of this area is capable of accommodating some car parking bays that are integrated with the shopping centre cap park.
  • a pedestrian walkway along the northern common boundary to enable future access to the adjoining property to the north at 265 Edmondson Avenue, should this neighbouring property be redeveloped to a commercial use.

The proposed new Austral Village will be a high quality and modern shopping centre that includes a full-line Coles supermarket, approximately 2,100m² of specialty retail space, and an estimated 273 space car park.

THE PROPOSAL

The proposed development of the new Austral Village will include the following:

  • demolition of all existing buildings and structures on the site at 83-95 Tenth Avenue & 249 Edmondson Avenue
  • construction of a new single-storey building & at-grade car park, including click-and-collect bays and shade sails.
  • main access driveway off Edmondson Avenue, and two secondary driveways off the proposed future road within the adjoining land to the east.
  • landscaping, including public domain improvement works along the Edmondson Avenue and Tenth Avenue frontages.

THE PLANNING PROCESS

The planning process includes several steps and there are opportunities throughout the process for you to review the proposal and make comment. At times throughout the planning process, the Project Team welcome your feedback here. Members of the community can make formal submissions to Council when the DA is placed on public exhibition, as shown in the Planning Pathway diagram.

Q1. What is proposed for 83 – 95 Tenth Avenue Austral?

Coles is proposing to redevelop the existing Austral Shopping Centre at 83-95 Tenth Avenue & 249 Edmondson Avenue. The shopping centre will be replaced by Austral Village, a new single story shopping centre that includes a full−line Coles supermarket, approximately 2150m² of specialty retail space and an approximate 273−space car park.

Q2. When will Coles Austral Village open?

Coles are in the early stages of the planning process. There is no opening date scheduled at this stage, however once required approvals are secured, construction is expected to take approximately 18 – 24 months. We encourage the community to monitor progress by following the Project Timeline tab.

Q3. What are the benefits for the local community?

The proposed centre will provide convenient, contemporary shopping facilities and specialty shops to meet the needs of the growing Austral community. The design aims to improve access and amenity, traffic flow and safety for customers and other stakeholders. Additional employment opportunities will be created during the operation phase.

Q4. How do I share my thoughts?

There will be opportunities to make submissions to Liverpool City Council about the proposal when the Development Application is placed on public exhibition. Please visit the website for updates about the Development Application process and public exhibition period.
